Buying Flooring Cash and Carry? Here's What to Pick Up Before You Start

Before you load up the truck, there's more to buy than just boxes of flooring. Here's what belongs on your list.

Start With the Flooring Itself

Walk our showroom floor and you'll see samples from the brands we carry, from waterproof LVP to carpet to hardwood and tile, laid out so you can see and feel the actual material before you buy. Bring room measurements, photos of the space, and an idea of how the room gets used. Our staff can help you figure out which in-stock options fit your project and your budget, and confirm what's actually sitting on the shelf that day versus what would need to be ordered.

Underlayment and Pad

It's easy to focus on the visible flooring and forget the layer underneath it, but pad and underlayment do real work. Carpet needs the right pad to hold up and feel the way it's supposed to. LVP often needs an underlayment for sound, comfort, or moisture protection depending on the subfloor it's going over. Skipping this step or grabbing whatever is cheapest can shorten the life of the floor above it. If you're not sure what your specific flooring calls for, ask before you check out, it's a quick conversation that saves a redo later.

Trim, Transitions, and Vents

New flooring almost always means new trim work. Baseboards may need to come off and go back on, doorways between rooms need transition strips so the new floor meets the old one cleanly, and floor vents and registers need to match the new surface. We carry Topstep vents and registers alongside our flooring specifically so DIY customers don't end up with a beautiful new floor and a mismatched, dated vent cover sitting in the middle of it. Walk through every doorway and vent location in the room before you buy, it's easy to miss one on the first pass.

Measure Twice, Buy a Little Extra

Measure the room carefully, including closets, and don't forget odd angles or nooks that eat up material in ways a quick tape-measure guess won't catch. It's common practice to buy a bit more than the bare square footage to cover cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching, plus keep a little extra on hand in case you ever need a repair down the road. Running short mid-project means a second trip, and if the batch you bought has sold out by the time you're back, dye lots and production runs can vary enough that a later purchase won't match perfectly.

Don't Forget the Small Stuff

A few smaller items make the difference between a smooth install and a frustrating one. Spacers to hold an even gap along the walls, a good utility knife or flooring cutter, adhesive or fasteners appropriate to the product you picked, and enough time set aside to let flooring acclimate to the room before you start, especially with LVP and hardwood. None of it costs much compared to the flooring itself, but forgetting a single item partway through a project usually means a trip back to the showroom mid-install instead of finishing the job in one weekend.

When to Call In a Pro

Cash and carry works great for a lot of projects, but some situations are worth handing to our in-house installation crew instead of tackling solo. Stairs, large open areas that need seams planned out, uneven or damaged subfloors, and transitions between rooms with different floor heights all get harder fast, and a mistake on flooring is expensive to undo.
