Why waterproof matters in kitchens, mudrooms and basements
A kitchen floor lives through spills, dropped ice cubes and a dishwasher that eventually leaks. A mudroom takes in wet boots and melting snow all winter. A basement sits over concrete that can carry moisture up through the slab even when nothing looks wet on the surface. Any of those rooms will eventually find the weak point in a floor that isn't built to handle water.
Luxury vinyl plank is built around a waterproof core, so water sitting on top of the floor doesn't have a path down into the subfloor the way it can with hardwood or a carpet pad. That's the reason it's become the standard pick for the rooms in a house that actually get wet, not just the rooms that look nice in photos.

Subfloor prep and expansion gaps: what fails when they're skipped
Plank flooring only performs as well as what it's installed over. A subfloor with old adhesive ridges, squeaky spots, or a low patch left over from a torn-out carpet tack strip will telegraph straight through the new floor, sometimes as a visible dip, sometimes as a click or a creak that shows up months later. Getting the subfloor flat, clean and dry before the first plank goes down is the part of the job nobody sees and the part that determines whether the floor stays flat.
Plank also needs room to expand and contract with the seasons. Skip the gap at the walls and transitions, and the floor has nowhere to go when it moves, which is how you end up with peaking at the seams or planks that start to buckle along a wall. It's an easy step to rush and an expensive one to fix after the fact.
Our crew handles both of those steps as a normal part of every install, not an upsell. It's the same reason we send our own installers instead of hiring it out: the people who measured your rooms and know what the subfloor looked like are the ones putting the planks down.
Chapter 03
Transitions and trim that finish the job
The plank itself is only part of the install. Where LVP meets tile in a doorway, where it meets carpet at the top of a basement stair, or where it runs into an exterior door, you need a transition piece that's sized and sanded to sit flush instead of catching a sock or a stroller wheel.
It's a small detail, but it's the difference between a floor that looks finished and one that looks like the job stopped at the doorway. We carry trim and transition pieces alongside the plank itself at the Mapleton showroom, so the whole job comes from one place and one crew.
Living with a vinyl plank floor
Day to day, LVP asks for less than most flooring: sweep or vacuum to keep grit from scratching the surface, damp mop with a cleaner made for vinyl rather than anything oil-based or heavily scented, and set felt pads under heavy furniture so legs don't dent the surface over time.
